Summary

During an inspection of a treatment cart, surveyors observed expired sterile dressings, including one pack of non-adhesive foam dressing and five packs of sterile gauze dressings, stored and readily available for use. The Registered Nurse present confirmed that these expired dressings should not have been kept in the treatment cart and should have been discarded. The Director of Nursing also acknowledged that expired dressings should not be stored in the treatment cart. Review of the facility's policy indicated that discontinued, outdated, or deteriorated drugs or biologicals are to be returned to the dispensing pharmacy or destroyed.
