A resident did not receive his prescribed pain medication, Pregabalin, due to it being unavailable, leading to potential discomfort. Despite having a physician's order, the medication was not administered for several days. The resident's family was informed of the shortage, and the Nurse Practitioner was unaware of the issue until notified by the family. There was no policy to ensure electronic prescriptions were ordered correctly, contributing to the deficiency.
Failure to Administer Pain Medication as Ordered

Summary
The facility failed to ensure that a resident received his prescribed pain medication, Pregabalin, as ordered, which created the potential for increased discomfort. The resident, who was cognitively intact, had been admitted with diagnoses including unilateral primary osteoarthritis of the left knee and a non-pressure chronic ulcer of the right foot. Despite having a physician's order for Pregabalin to be administered once daily, the medication was not given from October 3 to October 15, 2024, due to it being unavailable. The Medication Administration Record (MAR) did not provide a reason for the medication not being administered on October 2, 2024. Interviews revealed that the resident's family was informed that the medication ran out and was not reordered. The Nurse Practitioner, who also served as the Director of Nursing, was unaware of the medication's unavailability and had sent a prescription when informed by the family. However, there was no policy in place to ensure that electronic prescriptions were ordered as intended, leading to a lapse in medication administration. The lack of communication and policy regarding the ordering of medications contributed to the deficiency.
