Non-Functional Call System in Multiple Areas
Penalty
Summary
The facility failed to maintain an effective call system to allow residents to call for staff assistance. During an observation of the main shower room, the emergency pull cord call light was found to be non-functional. Further observations revealed that call lights were not functioning in multiple rooms and bathrooms, including rooms 101-A, 103-A, 102, 106, and 340. Interviews with staff, including the Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON), the former Maintenance Director, and the current Maintenance Director, indicated that there was a lack of awareness and communication regarding the non-functional call lights. The ADON was unaware of the issue until it was pointed out during the survey, and the former Maintenance Director mentioned difficulties in obtaining supplies due to outstanding invoices with local supply companies. The current Maintenance Director stated that he was responsible for ensuring the facility had a functioning call system and that he conducted daily rounds to inspect and repair call lights. However, he was not aware of any non-functional call lights prior to the survey. Interviews with a State Registered Nursing Assistant (SRNA) and the Director of Nursing (DON) further highlighted the issue, with the SRNA mentioning that some bathroom call lights had not been working and the DON stating she was unaware of any call lights not functioning. The Administrator emphasized the importance of functioning call lights and expected maintenance to address any issues immediately during morning stand-up meetings.
