Unsafe handling of visitor-brought food for a resident on neutropenic precautions

Rossmoor Post AcuteWalnut Creek, California Survey Completed on 07-09-2026

Summary

The facility failed to ensure safe and sanitary handling and consumption of food brought into the facility by family or visitors for one resident on neutropenic precautions. During observation, a sign posted on the resident’s door indicated neutropenic precautions, including a pictogram stating no raw fruits or vegetables, while a family member was observed bringing salads and other food items from home for the resident. During interview, the family member stated the resident had only one salad since arrival, so salads were brought from home, along with other foods and drinks in insulated containers with cold packs. The family member said no staff member had provided instructions or guidelines about food safety, labeling, dating items, or what foods were appropriate for the resident’s neutropenic condition. The dietary manager stated he was not aware of procedures for providing visitors with safe food handling information, could not identify who was responsible for communicating the policy to residents, families, or visitors, and stated he had not been trained on assisting residents with food brought in by visitors or on applying dietary restrictions associated with neutropenic precautions. The facility policy titled Foods Brought by Family/Visitors stated staff were to explain safe food handling practices and that food brought by family or visitors was to be labeled, dated, and stored in re-sealable containers with tight-fitting lids.
