Improper Dumpster Storage and Pest Attraction

High Valley LodgeSunland, California Survey Completed on 07-02-2026

Summary

The facility failed to dispose of garbage and refuse properly when two outside dumpsters were observed with bodies that were not free of rust, dirt, and dried liquid spills. During observation, the black-colored dumpster had a cluster of ants crawling on it, and both dumpsters had a gap of about three inches under the lids, leaving garbage exposed when the dumpsters were not in use. The blue-colored dumpster was also observed overflowing with garbage and not completely closed when not in use. During interview, the Dietary Supervisor stated that kitchen and food item garbage was collected by housekeeping staff after each meal and disposed of in the outside dumpster area. The Maintenance Supervisor stated that housekeeping staff removed garbage as needed and placed it in the dumpsters throughout the day, but did not know who was maintaining dumpster cleanliness. The Maintenance Supervisor also stated that the gap in both dumpsters could potentially attract insects and pests, and that the garbage cover should remain closed and sealed to prevent attraction of insects and pests. Facility policy required garbage containers to have tight-fitting lids, remain covered when not in use, be emptied daily, and have exteriors cleaned at least once a day.
