Improper Dumpster Closure and Refuse Storage
Summary
The facility failed to dispose of garbage and refuse properly for 2 of 2 dumpsters reviewed. During an initial kitchen tour on 05/04/2026, Dumpster #1 and Dumpster #2 were observed with the access doors left open on both sides. Follow-up observations on 05/05/2026 and 05/06/2026 again showed the dumpsters left open on one side, indicating the condition persisted over multiple days. The facility also failed to properly dispose or store items left outside the laundry room. On 05/04/2026, two bed frames, an air conditioning unit, and a lamp post light housing were observed in a patio area outside the facility laundry room. A later observation on 05/05/2026 showed the inoperable equipment was still present, and on 05/06/2026 the refuse outside the laundry room was still present. The Maintenance Director stated the air conditioning unit and beds had been placed there approximately 6 weeks earlier, and the lamp post housing had been there since before he became maintenance director in October 2025. Interviews with housekeeping, CNA, dietary, maintenance, dietary leadership, and the Administrator confirmed that dumpsters were expected to be closed when not in use and that whoever used them last was responsible for closing them. Staff also stated the items outside the laundry room were not an appropriate location for refuse or equipment that was not being repaired. Record review of the facility policy titled Sanitization stated garbage and refuse containers are to be properly contained in dumpsters/compactors with lids or otherwise covered, and areas used for garbage disposal are to be maintained to prevent pests.
