Unlabeled Food and Odor in Resident Refreshment Room

Park Manor Of WestchaseHouston, Texas Survey Completed on 04-09-2026

Summary

The facility failed to store, prepare, distribute, and serve food in accordance with professional standards in the Resident Guest Refreshment Room on the 400 hall. During observation, surveyors found an unsecured white bag in the refrigerator that was unlabeled and undated, and inside the bag was a partially opened white styrofoam container with food items exposed. The observation also noted an unpleasant odor in the room at the time of the visit. During interviews, CNA A stated the refreshment room had an unpleasant smell and that the odor continued despite prior work by Maintenance. CNA A said the room was used for residents' family members to bring in food and stated she would not put her food in the refrigerator because the smell made it a health hazard. Maintenance stated a plumbing company had previously installed a Sure Seal Drain Trap device to suppress odors in the pipes and said he would call the plumbing company again and was considering replacing the refrigerator. The Dietary Mgr stated families brought food for residents to the 400-hall Resident Guest Refreshment Center and that nursing staff were responsible for ensuring food was labeled with the resident name and date before accepting it. She stated unlabeled and undated food should be thrown out and said she seldom went into the room. The DON and ADM both stated food brought in by families should be labeled, dated, and not left open or exposed, and that the refrigerator was cleaned weekly. The ADM also stated the unpleasant smell had been discussed in morning meetings and was believed to come from the P-trap under the sink. The facility policy required food brought by visitors to be sealed, labeled with the resident's name and date received, and refrigerated if needed, with refrigerated home-cooked items discarded after three days.
