Laundry Services Failed to Return Residents’ Clothing Timely
Summary
The facility failed to maintain adequate laundry services because of staffing shortages, resulting in delayed return of residents’ clothing and a lack of available personal clothing for residents. The Environmental Services Account Manager job description states the manager is responsible for supervising environmental services staff and ensuring timely completion of work, and the Laundry Worker job description includes delivering personal clothing to the appropriate resident. The facility’s laundry handling policies state that delivery times should meet residents’ needs and that providing clean personal clothing is critical for resident care and dignity. Facility records and interviews showed repeated complaints about laundry not being returned, being placed in the wrong closets, or being delivered to the wrong resident. Resident Council minutes from March, April, and May documented ongoing concerns that laundry was not being delivered in a timely manner and that clothes and socks were missing. Grievance forms from multiple residents documented missing clothing items, including socks, underwear, pants, dresses, and boxers, with some residents reporting that clothing had not come back from laundry for weeks. One resident’s family began doing the resident’s laundry after repeated losses, and another family purchased additional clothing because items were not returned. On observation, one resident was found wearing a clean shirt but no pants and stated that laundry had not returned her pants. Her closet contained very little clothing and no pants. During a tour of the laundry room, surveyors observed a large bin full of clean clothing and barrels of dirty linen, and the Administrator in Training stated the facility had issues with timely distribution and had switched to an outsourced laundry agency to help. Staff and the ombudsman reported that the laundry room was backed up, that clean clothing needed folding and delivery, and that the department was short staffed, with only one laundry aide working each day and difficulty keeping up with the workload.
