Unsafe Room Temperatures in Resident Rooms
Summary
The facility failed to provide a comfortable and safe temperature level for three sampled residents by not ensuring the room temperature remained between 71 F and 81 F. Resident 1 was admitted with diagnoses including UTI, unspecified MS, and GBS, and her MDS indicated moderately impaired cognitive skills for daily decisions. During an interview, Resident 1 stated she was in Room A and that the room was so hot, noting that two other residents were also in that room. Resident 2 was admitted with diagnoses including unspecified respiratory failure, unspecified hypothyroidism, and DM. Her H&P stated she did not have the capacity to understand and make decisions, while her MDS indicated her cognitive skills for daily decisions were intact. During observation and interview, a window fan and a table fan were present in her room, and Resident 2 stated the room was very hot and that this was why she did not want any clothes on. She stated it became uncomfortable and she sweated a lot when the room was hot. Resident 3 was admitted with diagnoses including an unspecified fracture of the upper end of the left humerus, DM, and UTI. Her H&P and MDS indicated she had the capacity to understand and make decisions and that her cognitive skills for daily decisions were intact. During observation and interview, a table fan was clipped to a rolling table in her room, and Resident 3 stated the room was too hot and had been reported, but nothing had been done. Maintenance staff later checked the rooms and found temperatures including 77 F in the room shared by Residents 2 and 3, while other rooms in Station A were observed at 78 F, 80 F, 82 F, 82 F, 78 F, 78.2 F, 80 F, and 77 F. The DON stated room temperatures should be between 71 F and 74 F unless there is a resident request, and the facility policy required comfortable and safe temperatures.
