Improper Exterior Trash Disposal and Overflow
Summary
Improper disposal of garbage and refuse was identified in the exterior trash receptacle storage area outside the facility. During a facility tour and observation on 06/08/2026 at 9:11 AM, one of two trash receptacles was observed open, and trash was overflowing from the receptacle. The Director of Maintenance stated garbage was collected daily except Sundays and that staff who disposed of trash were responsible for keeping the receptacle lids closed and preventing overflow. The Director of Maintenance also stated unit supervisors should instruct staff not to overfill the receptacles and to ensure trash was disposed of properly during weekends. During a later interview, the Director of Maintenance stated the trash receptacle lids should remain closed, should not overflow, and the surrounding area should be kept free of trash to prevent attracting flies and rodents. The Director of Nursing stated garbage bins should not be full or overflowing and that the Maintenance Director should inspect the garbage bins daily because garbage collection was scheduled daily. A review of the facility policy titled Exterior Waste Storage and Sanitation Policy stated exterior waste storage areas and garbage containers should be maintained to prevent excessive accumulation of waste and that container lids should remain closed when practical and when not actively in use.
