Unsecured Medications, Treatment Carts, and Oxygen Equipment
Penalty
Summary
Facility staff failed to ensure that drugs, biologicals, and related medical supplies were securely stored and properly maintained on multiple units. On one unit, an oxygen tank assigned to a resident was observed sitting on the floor behind the resident’s bed without any supporting device. On another unit, a treatment cart was observed with a tube of Collagenase Santyl cream labeled for a specific resident left on top of the cart, while residents in power wheelchairs passed by and staff were present at the nursing station. These observations showed that medications and oxygen equipment were not consistently secured as required. Further observations on additional units revealed an unattended and unlocked treatment cart at a nursing station, and on a separate occasion, a treatment cart with Diclofenac gel labeled for a resident left on top along with multiple packs of dressings. These incidents occurred across three units and on more than one date, demonstrating repeated failures to keep medications and treatment supplies in locked compartments or otherwise secured from unauthorized access.
