Improperly Covered Garbage Compactor
Summary
The facility failed to ensure garbage was disposed of properly when a garbage compactor in the garbage disposal area had no top cover and was left open when not in use. During a concurrent observation and interview on 1/14/2026 at 2:04 p.m. with the Food Service Manager, the blue garbage compactor door was open, no staff were present, and the lid cover was missing. The Food Service Manager stated the compactor should have been covered from all sides when not in use to prevent odor and to prevent attracting pests. During a follow-up observation and interview on 1/15/2026 at 10 a.m., the same condition was observed, with the blue garbage compactor door still open, no staff around, and the lid cover still missing. The Food Service Manager stated she did not know why it was like this and said it was not okay and would attract pests and rodents. The Plant Operations Supervisor stated the garbage compactor had to be a closed container to prevent odor and harborage of pests, and the Infection Preventionist stated it should have been covered in all directions so it reduces the risk of bringing infection to residents. The facility policy titled Waste Management Program, dated 5/1/2025, stated all containers will have tight fitting covers in good repair and will be rodent proof, with tight fitting covers closed when not being loaded.
