Hoyer Lift Returned to Storage Without Disinfection

Pine Meadows Post AcuteLexington, Kentucky Survey Completed on 09-05-2025

Summary

The facility failed to provide an infection prevention and control program when 1 of 9 observed Hoyer lifts was not disinfected. Review of the facility’s policies showed reusable resident-care equipment and durable medical equipment were to be cleaned and disinfected before reuse by another resident, and the infection control policy stated the facility’s objective was to prevent, detect, investigate, and control infections while maintaining a safe, sanitary, and comfortable environment. On observation, a CNA exited a resident room with a Hoyer lift and returned it to the equipment storage area on Unit One without ensuring the lift was disinfected. During interviews, multiple CNAs stated lifts should be cleaned between residents, with some stating they used purple top wipes or Virex spray after use, while others said they assumed the lift had already been cleaned by someone else. One CNA stated she cleaned lifts before and after use, but another stated she cleaned them after use and not normally before use. The CNA observed returning the lift to storage stated it was possible she failed to clean it before returning it. The Infection Preventionist stated staff were expected to use purple wipes or Virex spray and clean multi-use resident equipment after use and when visibly dirty, but staff were not instructed to clean Hoyer lifts before use because it was assumed the lift was clean. The DON stated multi-use equipment, including Hoyer lifts, were to be cleaned after each use and before being taken into another room. The Administrator stated he expected staff to follow infection prevention policies and to clean multi-use equipment, including Hoyer lifts, before and after each use.
