Summary

The facility failed to follow food safety standards when an expired container of reduced fat milk, which had been brought in by a family member, was found in the snack refrigerator at nursing station 2. During an observation and interview with a licensed nurse, it was confirmed that the milk had expired over a month prior and had not been discarded. The nurse acknowledged that items brought in by families are supposed to be checked daily. Review of the facility's policy indicated that all food and beverages should be labeled, dated, and discarded if past the manufacturer's expiration date. The expired milk was not identified or removed in accordance with this policy.
