Summary

A deficiency was identified when a resident with an indwelling urinary catheter and urine drainage bag was observed with the urine bag visible in their room during a facility survey. The Geriatric Nursing Assistant (GNA) stated that a dignity bag was not used while the resident was in bed, only when the resident was out of bed and in a wheelchair. This resulted in the urine bag being exposed to anyone entering the room. Later, the same resident was observed in the hallway with a dignity bag that was ripped, fully exposing the urine bag. The LPN confirmed that the urine bag should always be covered with a dignity bag, regardless of whether the resident was in bed or out of bed, and that the bag should not be visible to others. The Director of Nursing also confirmed that the urine bag should not be visible at any time, indicating that the facility failed to maintain the resident's dignity by not ensuring the urine bag was properly covered.
