Summary

Staff failed to properly store a BiPAP respiratory therapy mask for a resident with multiple cardiac diagnoses and dependence in activities of daily living. The resident's care plan and physician orders indicated the use of a BiPAP device at bedtime. Observations on multiple occasions revealed the BiPAP mask was left lying on top of the machine on the bedside table, rather than being stored in a protective bag as required. During interviews, both a registered nurse and the Director of Nursing confirmed that the mask was not stored appropriately and acknowledged that the expectation was for respiratory masks to be kept in protective bags when not in use.
