The resident subsequently choked, was found clutching his throat and unable to cough, and multiple staff attempted the Heimlich maneuver without success before the resident became pulseless and CPR was initiated. EMS removed a large piece of meat completely obstructing the trachea, resuscitated the resident, and transferred him to the hospital, where records and the death certificate attributed anoxic brain death, cardiac arrest, and aspiration pneumonia to choking on food.
