Summary

Staff failed to ensure that waste was properly contained and that dumpster lids were kept closed, as required by facility policy. Observations revealed that the dumpster/compactor below the kitchen had its lids removed, with kitchen trash such as plastic lids, food cups, towels, condiment packets, and paper scattered around and on top of the dumpster. Maintenance staff explained that a chute previously used for trash disposal was removed due to blockages and odors, and that when the dumpster lids are closed, kitchen staff continue to throw trash through the former chute opening, resulting in garbage falling to the ground. Additionally, a second dumpster was observed with its lid open and surrounded by latex gloves, drink lids, and cigarette butts, while further inspection of the facility grounds found medical trash and other debris along the parking lot edge. Facility policy specifically requires that lids remain closed on all outside receptacles.
