Delayed Delivery of Wound Care Medication by Pharmacy
Penalty
Summary
A deficiency was identified when the pharmacy failed to provide a prescribed medication, Santyl ointment, for a resident's sacral wound in a timely manner. The physician had ordered Santyl to be applied daily to the wound, with Medihoney to be used only until Santyl arrived. However, during a wound care observation, Medihoney was still being used because Santyl had not yet been delivered by the pharmacy. Staff interviews revealed that the medication order, including required wound dimension documents, was sent to the pharmacy, and follow-up calls were made regarding the delivery. Despite these actions, the pharmacy reported a delay due to a perceived lack of documentation, although records showed the necessary documents had been provided. As a result, the resident did not receive the ordered Santyl treatment as scheduled.
