Summary

Surveyors observed that a cabinet in a resident's room contained several over-the-counter (OTC) medications, including bacitracin zinc ointment, Bigeloil topical pain gel, and lidocaine ointment. Review of the resident's physician orders for May 2025 showed there were no orders for these medications, nor was there an order permitting the resident to self-administer medication. During interviews, a CNA confirmed that such medications should be labeled and stored in the medication cart, and the ADON stated that staff are expected to keep all medications, including those brought in by family, in the medication cart. The presence of these medications in an unsecured location in the resident's room indicated that drugs and biologicals were not properly labeled or stored in locked compartments as required.
