Failure to Provide Showers on Assigned Days as Preferred by Residents
Penalty
Summary
The facility failed to maintain or enhance the dignity and respect of two residents by not providing showers on their assigned days according to their preferences. Policy review indicated that residents have the right to a dignified existence and to have their wishes and preferences considered, including reasonable accommodation of their needs. Both residents were cognitively intact, as evidenced by their BIMS scores of 15, and required staff assistance for bathing or were dependent on staff for showers. Despite being scheduled for showers on specific days, documentation and resident interviews confirmed that these showers were not consistently provided as scheduled. Resident #5, with diagnoses including Parkinson's Disease, Diabetes, Heart Disease, and Spondylosis, reported not receiving showers on multiple assigned days, preferring showers over baths. Resident #48, with diagnoses such as Atherosclerosis, Heart Disease, Heart Failure, Atrial Fibrillation, and Diabetes, also reported not receiving enough showers and not being offered showers as frequently as before. Hygiene records corroborated the missed showers for both residents. The DON confirmed that residents should receive showers on their assigned days, as per facility policy.
