Deficient Storage and Labeling of Medications and Biologicals
Penalty
Summary
Surveyors identified multiple deficiencies related to the storage and labeling of drugs and biologicals. In one instance, a resident with a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) had IV tubing and an IV-ceftriaxone medication bag that were not labeled with the date and time, contrary to facility policy and professional standards. Additionally, two medication carts were found to contain items that were either expired or not properly labeled, such as an open bottle of glucose strips without an open date, an expired insulin aspart pen, and an expired Fluticasone inhalation powder. Loose medications were also found in a medication drawer, and staff confirmed that such medications should be disposed of immediately if dropped. Further observations revealed a medication cup containing white powder left unattended on a resident's bedside table, which was reportedly used by nurses for application to the resident's groin area. In the medication room, personal items and food were found stored alongside medications, which staff acknowledged was not permitted. Interviews with nursing staff and the Director of Nursing confirmed that these practices were inconsistent with facility policies requiring proper labeling, timely disposal of expired medications, and secure, sanitary storage of all drugs and biologicals.
