Electrical Safety Deficiencies in Second Floor Wings
Penalty
Summary
The facility failed to maintain proper electrical safety standards across three wings on the second floor, as observed during a survey. Multiple deficiencies were noted, including the use of two-prong extension cords in several resident rooms, which were plugged into receptacles. Additionally, some rooms had multiple surge protectors in use with various items plugged in, without evidence that the power strips were adequate for the number and types of devices being powered, raising concerns about potential overloading. Damaged cord insulation was also observed in the cords of adjustable hospital beds in two rooms. Further observations revealed the use of a three-prong to two-prong adapter in one room and an extension cord plugged into an outlet in another. In one instance, a surge protector was plugged into another surge protector, again without evidence of adequacy for the devices being powered. These deficiencies were confirmed by the maintenance director during the survey, indicating a lack of adherence to electrical safety protocols as outlined in NFPA standards.
Plan Of Correction
All resident rooms will be inspected to ensure the electrical power cords and surge protectors are maintained and utilized properly. Letters will be sent to residents and/or responsible representatives informing them of the proper use of electrical power cords/surge protectors within the Center. Staff education will be completed by the Staff Educator/designee of the proper use of electrical power cords/surge protectors. Center audits will be conducted by the Managers/Designee in resident rooms three times per week for one month to ensure the electrical power cords and surge protectors are maintained and utilized properly. Audit findings will be discussed during our Quality Assurance meeting.
