Staffing Shortages in Nurse Aide Coverage
Penalty
Summary
The facility failed to meet the required nurse aide staffing levels as per the regulation effective July 1, 2024. On November 29, 2024, during the day shift, the facility did not provide the minimum of one nurse aide per ten residents, as only 8.5 full-time equivalents (FTE) were present instead of the required 8.7 for a census of 87 residents. Additionally, on November 28, 2024, during the night shift, the facility did not meet the minimum requirement of one nurse aide per fifteen residents, with only 4.09 FTE present instead of the required 5.8 for the same census. The Director of Nursing confirmed these staffing shortages and acknowledged that there were no additional higher-level staff available to compensate for the deficiency.
Plan Of Correction
The residents had no negative outcome from not meeting a minimum of one nurses aide per 10 residents on the day shift, one nurses aide per 15 residents on night shift. We are working with a local school to start offering CNA classes. The DON or designee will provide the staffing coordinator with education on the Pennsylvania staffing requirements. Staffing coordinator or designee will audit the ratios daily times 4 weeks, and monthly times 1 month. Audit results will be reviewed through the monthly QAPI process/meeting.
